Fleur de Sel
Fleur de Sel French for Flower of salt is produced
in several coastal areas
around the world . It’s a type of sea salt, but a
very expensive one indeed. Fleur de Sel is a gift
from nature, and is known for many of its healing
properties, including restoring calm and balance in
those who use it, probably due to its pure clean
crystals that contains a natural balance of
life-enhancing minerals. As with the picking of wild
mushrooms, the
hand-harvesting
of Fleur de Sel reflects the harmonious and
ecological partnership of humans and Nature. This
traditional craft is done in an eco-friendly,
sustainable way. This unique sea salt, which is
prized by gourmets and health aficionados alike, is
formed on the surface of the salt crystallizing
ponds. It is lighter in colour than the grey sea
salt, and the crystals are of a finer texture. The
beautiful crystals of Fleur de Sel are naturally
dried by the sun. They are what many regard as the
pinnacle of natural sea salt. Some call Fleur de Sel
the "diamonds of the sea" or "white gold". Fleur de
Sel de is a rare and very special sea salt which
reflects the richness and wholeness of its natural
source: the Sea.
Many sea salts are refined and processed. Fleur de
Sel, however,
is
hand-harvested by traditional methods in the
pristine salt marshes of the Arabian Sea in the
foothills of Pure Himalayas
This traditional Arabian salt comes from sea water
that is pooled into basins and then naturally
evaporated - it's unrefined and yet so pure so it
retains more of the minerals that naturally occur in
seawater. Salt aficionados note that Hub Salt’s sea
salt has a much softer and fresher flavour than
ordinary table salt, and that the difference is
worth it. Fleur de sel (the flower of the salt) is
whiter, but has a similar flavour to grey salt. The
moist texture results from naturally-occurring
crystals which give Fleur de Sel it's unique
characteristics.
These exceptionally flavourful crystals are
hand-raked
and
harvested at our solar harvesting site in the
deserts of Pakistan . The name comes from the aroma
of violets that develops as the salt dries. Only the
premium, top layer of the salt bed is used.
The flavour is marvellous in comparison to other
salts. Unlike processed salts, Fleur De Sel is a
natural source of potassium, calcium, magnesium,
copper and iodine. The taste is a delicate balance
of the numerous salts, minerals, and micronutrients;
this is truly the finest salt available.
These small flaky crystals have a
moist texture and a slight grey and pink hue. For
maximum flavour, sprinkle fleur de Sel by hand over
foods just before serving to draw out the full
flavours of the other ingredients. This is a natural
compliment to fresh salads and vegetable dishes.
Since the Fleur de Sel is captured at an early stage
of crystallization it contains almost no insoluble
impurities as compared to the normal edible grades
of sea salt available in the market.
Common uses are to garnish a nice dish, sprinkle
onto bread with unsalted butter or as a spice to
sprinkle onto a finished dish. Most gourmet stores
will sell it in small portions and all you really
need is a pinch at a time, which makes the price
comparable to some exotic spices. Be wary of very
discounted prices as they may not be for the real
thing.
Plain table salt is generally almost
entirely sodium chloride, while sea salts contain a
higher percentage of other minerals from the
evaporating sea water which give various sea salts
distinctive flavors.
The crystals are also somewhat
larger and coarser than the iodized table salt you
buy in the grocery store. Fleur de Sel's irregular
crystals form flake like clumps due to moisture (as
would every day table salt without iodine) which
makes it fairly crunchy. The amount of other
minerals cuts down on the salt taste in Fleur de Sel
and according to some it has an aroma similar to
violets. The harvesting process ensures that Fleur
de Sel contains only the purest part of the saline
which also cuts down on the salty taste. What makes
the salt from HUB SALT so special is that the area
has a particularly mild climate, natural salt fields
and particularly clean water currents from the
Arabian Sea that makes the salt there superior to
all other Fleur de Sel produced in other regions of
the highly industrialized world.
